Buy local this Christmas | By Sindy Cross, 21 November 2018

It is no secret that small businesses are the backbone to the UK economy. With Christmas just around the corner, it’s time to start thinking about your Christmas shopping. Here are a few things to think about when shopping this year:

Buying from a small business boosts the local economy
When you support a local business, you are also supporting the local area. Small business owners pay rates to the local council and this money goes towards improvements and services within the business area. If you choose to buy from a corporate chain, the money is likely to go elsewhere and will not benefit the local community.

Unique personalised gifts
Small business owners are able to invest in locally made products that are unique. This means you can buy very personalised gifts that your family will love, with a child’s name or favourite character, to make it more personal.

Excellent service
Word of mouth is the bread and butter for small businesses and with the rise of social media, it is now even more important to focus on delivering the best service. If they deliver a great service, it’s likely the customer will share this with a friend! That’s why small business owners aim for perfection every time.

Doing a little jig!
When you buy from a small business, you are not just buying a gift, you are helping that person put food on the family table. Maybe, you are helping them send their children to swimming lessons and buying a new pair of school shoes. You are making a different to that person life, so sometimes, you might just see them do a little jig as you leave the shop.

So, buy local and support your local economy.
